The  eland, as a herbivore, eats grasses, foliage and branches, with regular intake of water. They usually form small herds consisting of 15-25 members, both males and females. The giant eland is mainly solitary, and not found to be territorial. They do not exhibit angry expressions most of the time, and are alert in nature. Their speed, which can be up to 70 km/h (43 mph), helps in defending themselves from predators. They mostly inhabit broad-leafed savannah, woodland and glades in central and western Africa.
