Swan
The popular swans of Shollenberger Park are the
classic ones of fairy-tales. Large (40 inches) and snowy white, with a
graceful, slender neck that curves in an elegant S-shape at rest. Adults
have orange bill with black base, lores, and knob above bill.Old-world in origin, the Mute Swan was brought to
the U.S. to grace ponds of eastern estates more than a century ago.
Population expanding to the west.Swans are omnivorous birds but have a very vegetarian diet.
Swans eat underwater vegetation such as seaweed and aquatic plants when
they are on the water and a mixture of plants, seeds and berries when
they are on land. Swans also eat insects both water and land based and the occasional small fish.Although swans do not mate for life, couples establish strong bonds between one another and can often mate for a few years.
